Private Label Gel Polish: Launching a Brand in 90 Days
A realistic 12-week plan covering trademark, formula, packaging, photography and first stock β with the three decisions that actually determine whether you launch on time.
Ninety days is enough to launch a private label gel polish line, but only if you start the slow items first. Most brands start with the color, which is the fastest part, and discover in week nine that the trademark search takes three weeks and the label printer needs a month.
Weeks 1β2: name, trademark, market position
Run a trademark search before you fall in love with a name. Check your target markets, not just your home country β a name that is clear in the US can be blocked in the EU. In parallel, decide the position: salon professional, retail consumer, or both. That choice sets the bottle, the brush, the price band and the shade count, and changing it in week six resets everything.
Weeks 2β4: formula and shade range
Send physical swatches, not photos. Choose 12 to 18 shades for a first range β enough to look like a real line, few enough to keep inventory sane. Split them deliberately: four to six core shades that will always sell, four seasonal, and the rest as accents that make the range look considered rather than random.
Weeks 3β6: packaging, in parallel with everything else
Packaging has the longest lead time of any item and is the most common reason launches slip. Stock bottles ship in days; custom moulds take 30 to 45 days. Label printing is 10 to 15 days after artwork approval, and artwork approval takes longer than anyone plans for. Order bottles before the formula is final β the bottle does not care what goes inside it.
Weeks 6β8: photography and content
You need three image sets: bottle on white, swatch on a nail tip, and lifestyle. Shoot the nail tips on real hands if you can β buyers can tell the difference between a rendered swatch and a photographed one, and the photographed one sells. Budget a full day for 18 shades; it always takes longer than planned.
Weeks 8β10: compliance file
Assemble the product information file: INCI list per shade, safety data sheet, certificate of analysis, and β depending on market β CPNP notification for the EU or FDA establishment registration for the US. This is paperwork, not science, but missing it stops a shipment at customs faster than any quality issue.
Weeks 10β12: first stock and launch
Production runs 25 to 30 days, so the order must be placed by week 8 to land in week 12. Launch with the shades you have rather than waiting for the full range β the first month of real sales data is worth more than three more shades.
The three decisions that determine your launch date
- Custom bottle or stock bottle β this alone is a 30-day swing
- Physical swatch or photo for color approval β photos cost two extra rounds
- One decision-maker or a committee β every additional approver adds a week
If you have a name, a market and a rough shade direction, the rest is scheduling. Send us your brief and we will tell you which of the twelve weeks is likely to slip for your specific range.
