Cat Eye Gel Polish Colors: How to Choose (17 Shades)
How base lightness, particle colour and pigment load interact across 17 shades, plus the four that cover 80% of demand and a six-shade launch structure.
Ten of our seventeen cat eye shades are grey. That is not a lack of imagination β grey holds a magnetic band more visibly than any other base, because it has no competing hue to fight the silver-white reflection. If you are choosing your first shades, start grey, then add one nude, one gold and one deep colour.
Why the swatch never matches the nail
A cat eye swatch is two colours in one surface: the base, and the band of aligned particles that reads silver-white. On a flat colour, the swatch shows you what you will get. On cat eye, the swatch shows you the average of a surface that changes with every angle and every magnet.
- Under direct light the band reads bright white; in shade it disappears almost entirely
- A round swatch on a chart looks darker than the same shade on a curved nail, because the nail catches more light
- The band's position changes with magnet angle, so no two nails are identical
- Photographs flatten the effect β a shade that looks flat in a photo can be striking in person
This is why we photograph every shade on an actual nail rather than a colour chip. A chip tells you the base colour; only a nail tells you the effect.
The three variables that decide how a shade looks
- Base lightness β a dark base gives maximum contrast, a pale base gives a soft sheen. Same particles, completely different read
- Particle colour β most cat eye powder is silver-white, but gold and copper variants exist and change the band's temperature
- Pigment load β heavy pigment hides particles and dulls the band; light pigment lets the band dominate and the shade reads almost metallic
Our LW308 Gold, for example, is not a gold base with silver particles. It is a warm ochre base with gold-tinted particles, which is why the band reads champagne rather than white. Change either variable and the shade name stops being accurate.
What is actually in our 17 shades
- Grey β 10 shades: LW301 to LW306, LW312 to LW315. Cool silver through warm greige. The core of the range
- Nude β 3 shades: LW307 warm beige, LW309 caramel, LW311 pink nude
- Gold β 1 shade: LW308, warm ochre with a champagne band
- Red β 1 shade: LW310, deep red with a cool band
- Teal β 1 shade: LW317, the only blue-green in the range
- Brick β 1 shade: LW318, the darkest and warmest shade we make
All 17 are 15 ml, all cure UV 60 seconds or LED 30 seconds, all at 200 bottles per shade MOQ. The range is built as a complete set rather than a sampler, which is why the grey family is deep β buyers who stock grey need options within grey, not one token grey.
Choosing by base lightness
- Pale base (LW301, LW303, LW311, LW313): a soft sheen, office-safe, reads as a pearl finish rather than a cat eye
- Mid base (LW302, LW306, LW309, LW314, LW315): the band is clearly visible and the shade still works as a wearable colour
- Deep base (LW310, LW317, LW318): maximum contrast, the band looks almost chrome. These are the shades that photograph best
Choosing by skin tone
Cat eye is more forgiving than flat colour because the band adds light rather than a hue. The rule that matters is temperature, not depth.
- Cool undertones: LW301, LW314, LW317 β silver-grey and teal sit naturally
- Warm undertones: LW306, LW308, LW309, LW318 β greige, gold, caramel and brick
- Neutral: LW303, LW311, LW315 β the safest choices when you cannot see the client in daylight
- Very deep skin: LW310 and LW318 read best; pale greys can look chalky against deep skin in low light
Choosing by occasion
- Office and clinical: LW303, LW311, LW313 β subtle enough that the pattern reads as sheen, not decoration
- Evening and events: LW310, LW317, LW318 β high contrast, strong under low light
- Bridal: LW307, LW308, LW311 β champagne and nude, photographs warm without competing with the dress
- Summer: LW314, LW317, LW308 β cooler and lighter, reads fresh in daylight
- Winter: LW310, LW318, LW306 β deeper and warmer
The four shades to start with
If you are stocking cat eye for the first time, four shades cover 80% of demand: one pale grey (LW303), one deep grey (LW314), one nude (LW309), one deep colour (LW318). That set handles office, evening, bridal and statement work, and it costs a fraction of a full 17-shade commitment.
Add gold (LW308) and red (LW310) as the fifth and sixth. Those two are the shades that sell to clients who already own the basics and want something different.
Which shades photograph best
Contrast wins, every time. LW310, LW317 and LW318 have the highest base-to-band contrast and the most saturated bases, which is why they survive compression and small screens. Pale greys are beautiful in person and disappointing on a phone.
For social content, photograph at a low angle with a single hard light source. The band is a reflection, so the light position determines whether you see a line or a flat surface.
Building a range as a brand
A six-shade private label launch should look like this: two greys (one pale, one deep), one nude, one gold, one deep colour, one accent. That covers the four customer intents β office, bridal, evening, statement β with no shade sitting unused.
A twelve-shade range adds nuance within each family: three greys instead of two, two nudes instead of one. Beyond twelve, you are adding shades that sell to the same customer rather than to new ones, which is fine if your channel is salons and pointless if it is a single retail shelf.
FAQ
Why do most cat eye shades look grey in the bottle?
Because the magnetic powder is silver-white and needs a neutral base to read as a band rather than as a colour cast. Grey is the neutral that lets the band dominate.
Can I layer cat eye over any colour?
Yes, and it changes the shade entirely. Cat eye over navy reads blue-silver, over burgundy reads rose-gold. The 17 shades are the base colours we have tested; the technique works over most dark colours.
Which shade hides ridges best?
Mid-tone greys β LW306, LW315. Pale shades show texture, deep shades show every high point under light. Mid-tones diffuse both.
Is gold cat eye actually gold?
LW308 is a warm ochre base with gold-tinted particles. The band reads champagne, not yellow gold. If you want a true gold, apply it over a yellow-gold base colour.
Do the shades have different cure times?
No. All 17 cure at UV 60 seconds or LED 30 seconds at 48 W. Pigment load varies slightly but not enough to change the cure window.
Once the shades are chosen, the application guide covers how to keep the band sharp; and if you are still deciding whether cat eye earns its extra time, see the comparison with regular gel.
Bottom line
Cat eye colour is a contrast decision, not a hue decision. Choose the base lightness first β pale for subtle, deep for chrome β then the particle temperature, warm or cool. Start with four shades: LW303, LW314, LW309, LW318. Everything else is refinement.
