What Is Cat Eye Gel Polish? A Factory Guide
What sits in the formula, how the band forms, the six cure parameters that matter, and why factory gel behaves differently from retail. A technical breakdown.
Cat eye gel polish is a UV/LED-cured gel carrying microscopic magnetic particles. Hold a magnet 1–3 mm above the wet film for 5–10 seconds and those particles align into a band of light — that band is the cat eye. Our LW series runs 17 shades in 15 ml bottles, cures in 30 seconds under LED, and holds the pattern for 10–14 days.
What separates cat eye gel from ordinary colour gel
Ordinary colour gel is pigment suspended in a resin base. Cat eye gel adds a third component: magnetically alignable powder, usually 5–20 μm across. The powder does not change the colour — it changes where the light goes. Under a magnet the particles stack into lines; once cured, those lines stay where they were put.
- Pigment load runs higher than standard colour gel, so cat eye reads darker and deeper in the bottle
- The gel stays workable longer, because the pattern has to be set before the lamp
- One bottle produces several different looks depending on magnet shape and angle
How the magnetic effect is actually created
The particles are ferromagnetic — coated iron oxide held in suspension. While the gel is liquid they are free to move. A neodymium magnet brought close pulls them toward its poles, and because the field is not uniform the particles form ridges instead of a flat layer. Those ridges scatter light at different angles, which is why the shimmer appears to travel as the nail tilts.
This is also why timing matters more than any other variable. Once the gel passes under the lamp the resin cross-links and the particles lock. Magnetise too early and the pattern drifts while you reach for the lamp; magnetise too late and nothing happens at all.
What is inside a cat eye gel formula
- Urethane acrylate oligomer — the backbone that gives flexibility and adhesion
- Magnetic powder at 5–20 μm — the optical engine
- Photoinitiator — reacts to 365–405 nm light and starts the cure
- Pigment and dye — sets the base colour the pattern floats on
- Rheology modifiers — keep the gel thick enough to hold a pattern without running
A formula that skips the rheology modifiers looks fine in the bottle and fails on the nail: the particles sink before the magnet ever reaches them.
Five cat eye effects from one bottle
- Single line — a bar magnet held flat. Sharpest and most classic
- Multi-line — a multi-pole magnet, or two passes with a bar magnet
- Velvet — a weak field held at distance, so particles spread into a soft glow
- Galaxy — two magnets at opposing angles, one after the other
- French tip — a small round magnet run along the free edge only
The gel is identical in all five. Only the magnet changes.
Cure and application parameters that work
These are the numbers we hand to our own OEM customers:
- Base coat: 30 seconds LED, thin film
- Cat eye layer: 8–10 μm — do not over-brush, brushing re-orients the particles
- Magnet distance: 1–3 mm. Past 5 mm the field weakens and the line goes fuzzy
- Magnet hold: 5–10 seconds. Longer does not sharpen it further
- Cure: 30 seconds LED or 60 seconds UV, immediately after the magnet comes off
- Top coat: 60 seconds LED for a no-wipe finish
How long does cat eye gel polish last
10–14 days on a properly prepped nail, the same as our standard colour gel. Wear time is set by prep and top coat, not by the magnetic powder. Removal is soak-off: 10–15 minutes in acetone, no drilling, no filing of the natural plate.
Why factory cat eye differs from retail cat eye
Retail cat eye ships in 5–8 ml with a brush in the cap and a magnet in the box. Factory cat eye ships in 15 ml, no magnet, priced per bottle at volume. The chemistry is usually the same. If you are building a brand, buy the gel in bulk and source magnets separately — the margin sits in the packaging, not the formula.
Cat eye gel for private label and wholesale
We produce 17 cat eye shades, LW301 to LW318, in 15 ml bottles, from our Foshan facility under cosmetics production licence 粤妆20260015. Wholesale starts at 200 bottles per shade; semi-finished gel is 5 kg per drum.
- 17 shades from grey and taupe through to blue and copper
- 15 ml bottle, UV 60s / LED 30s
- HEMA-free and TPO-free variants available for the EU
- Private label: bottle, cap, label and box
- Custom shade matching from a physical sample or a Pantone reference
FAQ
Is cat eye gel polish safe?
Yes, when the formula is compliant and the cure is complete. The magnetic powder is encapsulated and does not migrate out of cured gel. The real risk in this category is uncured monomer, which is a lamp and timing problem rather than a cat eye problem.
Can you use cat eye gel without a magnet?
You can apply it, but you get a flat shimmer instead of a defined eye. Some brands sell it as "galaxy gel" for exactly that reason.
Why does my cat eye effect disappear after curing?
Three causes, in order of frequency: the magnet was held beyond 5 mm, the gel was brushed after magnetising, or the layer was too thin to hold the particles.
Does cat eye need a special top coat?
No. Any no-wipe top coat works. What matters is applying it only after the cat eye layer is fully cured, otherwise the pattern drags.
How many shades should a first order cover?
Most brands start at 8–12. Below 8 the display looks thin; above 16 the slow movers tie up cash. Our 17-shade range is built so that a 12-shade order still covers the full colour spread.
The physics behind that band is covered in how cat eye gel polish works; if the product is already on your bench, go straight to the eight-step application guide.
Bottom line
Cat eye is not a separate product category. It is colour gel with one extra component and one extra step, and the extra step is a magnet plus five seconds. Get the timing right and a single 15 ml bottle gives you five finishes. Get it wrong and you have an expensive flat gel.
